Drug / Vaccine allergy

Patients with a history concerning for an allergic reaction to a medication or a vaccine should be evaluated by an allergy specialist.  In some cases, allergy testing can be performed to determine whether the patient is at risk for an IgE-mediated, or immediate-type hypersensitivity reaction to that medication.  If a patient needs a medication or vaccine to which they are allergic, drug desensitization may be performed in certain circumstances.  Desensitization involves administering gradually increasing doses of a drug to which a patient is allergic.  This gradually decreases the patient’s sensitivity to the drug in question.  Once desensitized, the patient must take the drug continuously, without missed doses, until the treatment is complete.  If the course of treatment is interrupted, the desensitization must be performed again.
