Oral Food Challenges
Oral challenges are the gold standard for diagnosing food allergies. During a food challenge, patients will be given gradually increasing amounts of a food to which they are suspected to be allergic. Patients are closely monitored during food challenges, with medications available to treat a potential allergic reaction. Patients will not be recommended for food challenge unless their clinical history and allergy testing suggest that there is a low likelihood of reaction to the food in question.
Patch Testing
Patch testing is a form of skin testing in which suspected allergens are applied to the skin and covered for several days. The patches are then removed and read by the allergist. This type of testing can be helpful in the identification of possible causes of contact dermatitis.
